I know any review is a good review but...
Is it too much to ask that you spend the majority of your review discussing the story instead of bashing the plot and main pairing of the canon? I wouldn't be writing fic for this fandom if I didn't like the canon. I mostly write non-canon pairings, but a quick look at my journal would show I've made my peace with the canon ship. My journal isn't your personal soapbox. |

OMG, I LOVE these things!!!! I used ot eat these nearly every day in Japan, always had some in my freezer. They're essentially a little rice cake/ mochi filled with ice cream and they are lovely. I was bopping about York after my interview (I don't want to talk about it) and found a tiny little oriental supermarket, mostly Japanese stuff too and lo, in the freezer there were the yukimi daifuku!!! I never thought I'd be able to find them outside of Japan. Now if only I could find Pino too I'd have all of my Japanese ice cream needs seen to. Oh and if Mr Donut could launch over here that'd be swell coz I've been craving an angel cream for an age!
Oh yeah, the other thing, we harvested our mushroom crop today! I bought dad mushroom plugs last christmas and today we ate the delicious results. Mushroom Bruschetta and pictures of our monster oyster mushrooms over at Annainthekitchen. |

Author, sweetie. I love your story. I really do. It's compelling, the characters are IC, the plot is a favorite of mine. But here's my problem: About 30 chapters into your epic, all of a sudden you change your tone, voice and point of view so that this one character can share this long and involved history. This history of his is in its own chapter and when copied to Word is 15 pages long. I have been jarred completely out of your story. I'm going to finish reading, but I'm insanely confused. I know you could have dropped this information throughout your story instead of devoting an entire chapter to an info dump. I know you could have handled the whole thing so much better than simply cramming all of it into one chapter in a different style, voice and point of view. If this random change of style/voice/pov/etc. was something consistent throughout your story, I'd forgive you. But it's not.

1) McDex is extremely rare pairing. There’s age difference between them, experience difference, huge cultural difference. But the author for some reason is using main fandom pairing relationship dynamics (as in McShep) to describe her rare pairing relationship.
Funny thing is that if you try and insert Sheppard from the main pairing instead of Dex in the fic, nothing would change at all. Question: why bother with new and shiny pairing for this?
2) It’s somehow believable for 17-year-old to tell someone that he’s gay and that he already had sex of all kinds imaginable. And that his father oppressed and abused him for being gay. However, it’s not very convincing if that information comes to light in a small talk with person the teenager met fifteen minutes ago for the first time ever.

I'm not really an American-picker, for the most part. Though, I am something of a teeth-grinder and non-commenter when military stuff is screwed up. Not that I comment because I screw military stuff up so I keep my mouth shut.
Anyway. Despite our overweening love of all things automobile, the United States of America does have trains. We have a huge and well used railroad system that hauls millions of tons of freight every single day. Cities have freight yards where goods are off-loaded and on-loaded. Intermodal freight systems are very popular on our railways. We even have *gasp* passenger trains that run across the entire country, length, breadth, and slantwise. It may not be popular or normalized in the media, but trains do exist in the US of A and we do make prodigious use of them. All Americans know what trains are and that we have them because in every part of America there are train tracks. We even use the expression "They grew up on the wrong side of the tracks." That refers to the train tracks, not animal tracks or some other thing. Even completely moronic, uneducated Americans will know what a train is and what train tracks are for. A reasonably educated American, say a CSI character, will not be completely shocked and totally surprised to find that Las Vegas has train tracks running through it. Nor will he be shocked and surprised to discover that working trains actually use said tracks. |

Very nitpicky, and may be YMMV, but if a teacher were to call a student "eye candy," there may be some sexual harrassment issues. Also, I'm not really sure why a teacher would assign an essay to compare Dickens and Shakespeare. Unless, of course, they're covering the entire span of British literature in one week. Generally, when I was in high school, you'd be assigned two authors from similar periods, or who wrote similar genres, to compare and contrast, not two random British writers. It's kind of like me saying "Write an essay comparing Stephen Sondheim and Louisa May Alcott." Not wrong, just... random.
Also, when it's considered "mild-character bashing" to have a slightly annoying but harmless character rape someone, you need to change your perception filters ;)
Oh, and Kurt's still not a girl (ETA: insert random Glee rant) and Ianto's more than capable of defending himself when Jack's not dragging him into potentially hazardous situations without any gear. Just saying. |

I know this has been done to death but come on now. If the guy keeps saying no and variations of the same, then it is not dub-con, it is NON-CON. It doesn't matter if the guy has a thing for forceful guys or rough sex. Nothing in his words or behavior even implied 'yes,' and no, getting turned on does not count. Unless it's playing, generally with a safe word, no means no. Please, stop insisting it was only dub-con. Now I'm a little freaked out by you. |

When did we decide that Nightcrawler can't pronounce the word "You"? I know he has a strong accent, but his problem is mostly with W and TH sounds, from what I can recall. What's with this trend of having him say "vou" or "zou"?
I've confirmed that he doesn't do that in X-Men Evolution, and while I don't have the movies or the comics to check, I'm pretty sure he doesn't do it there, either. And most of the fanfics I've seen that do this have been in the animated fandom.
So where is this coming from? |

Hey Everyone! :D i'm new to the community and I just want to say that everyone here seems really nice judging by the posts I've read and I hope we can all be friends! Yes, I'm a guy. Yes, I LOVE Pretty Cure! :D Favorite Series: Pretty Cure Splash Star, Favorite Mascot: Coco, Favorite Cure: Cure Egret/ Cure Peach. Haha, and beyond my introduction, I have here a special little preview of something I've been working on for a few weeks now that I hope everyone will enjoy. ^_^
The Symphony Kingdom lies in the center of the Four Fountains. Each fountain has a mystical instrument to harness the energy that brings life to the Kingdom. When the Dark Orchestra comes to steal away these instruments, two small beings, Kiseki and Negai, leave to search for the protectors of the Symphony Kingdom: Pretty Cure! Ayaka Himawari and Kairi Tsukimi are two ordinary school girls at a performing arts academy. When the two are victims of the Dark Orchestras attack on the students, the two are confronted by Kiseki and Negai as the chosen warriors and together they become Cure Harmony and Cure Melody! The two girls fight against the Dark Orchestra to save the Symphony Kingdom before the Fountains run out of energy, leaving the Kingdom barren and inhabitable. With the guidance of Kiseki and Negai, the two girls search for the mystical instruments to defeat the Dark Orchestra. Along the way they’ll battle the terrifying monsters, Hidoina, and come across new foes and allies. Ok, this has gone on long enough. I understand they need to practice manoeuvers but surely they could practice somewhere else? All day there have been helicopters going over the village every 20 minutes or so and I am about to crack. The jets I don't mind, 10 seconds and they're gone but the copters give you a good 5 minutes of wopwopwopwwopwopwop and the thrumming hurts my ears. Also helicopters seem to me to be very easy to shoot down, they're easy to pinpoint, even in the dark, especially when they have the blinky lights on them. Tell me we turn off the blinky lights in places like Afganistan at least? And I have to admit that at the minute I'm idly contemplating what I could russle up to get rid of the damned things! Potato rocket launcher anyone? |

McGee already has a sister. Her name is Sarah. She was once accused of murder. You didn't have to give him a completely different sister named Gemma who was is also accused of murder. A murder that's looking to be the same one that Sarah was accused of. It doesn't make any sense to do that.

I had recently watched a classic movie and came to remember how much I loved it as a child. I thought the movie had lots of fic potential, and went looking for stories based on it.
There were very few things of interest, but one fic caught my eye. It was a sort of "what-if" scenario taking place in the middle of the movie, and basically an excuse for the author's OC to take in the main character and adopt him as a son. I thought it was a cute idea, and while the bulk of the fic was a repeat of things that happened earlier in the movie, I don't mind that sort of thing. It was angsty and melodramatic and I lapped it up like candy because I honestly like that sort of thing. But...
( To understand this fic, you have to read another fic based on completely different fandom you don't even like! TEEHEE~! )
I'm not going to read this book series just so I can understand one dinky little fic for a completely different movie. I enjoyed your story and would like to know more, but if you don't care enough to explain who your OC is within the fic, then why should I care enough to go through your archive to learn more? If you don't think he's worth the effort, then nor do I. |

Please, for the love of whatever you value most, WARN FOR INCEST! Several fics in a row with unwarned for incest and no pairings listed in the summary. Is it really so hard to select 'Incest' from the warnings list? Honestly? You managed to get all the way down to yaoi, after all, so it's not like it was extra effort.
Also, specific author, warning for scat and watersports would have been appreciated. I nearly lost my breakfast when I came across it in graphic detail, smack dab in the middle of your fic. |

The Master isn't a woobie.* He isn't suddenly gonna decide that he really, really cares about everyone and wants to help Earth. Oh, he might *SAY* it, but he's not gonna actually believe it (barring, of course, some weird alien influence).
The Master's not going to be reformed by the power of the Doctor's love (or by the Healing Cock). No, really. He might become slightly less... maniacal, but he's not gonna suddenly be good and all "Let's save the world!! Whee!" (Unless, of course, it was a giant mindfuck, of which I completely approve).
Also, the Doctor's not suddenly gonna become more evil than the Master just because they're fucking. No, really. That's not the way it works.
It is possible to write Master/Doctor fic without making the Doctor evil as hell or making the Master sweet and caring and not-evil.
And I'm *pretty* sure that if the Master started acting like that, the Doctor would get very suspicious and start trying to figure out what his motive was.
*Granted, I haven't seen any Classic Who eps with the Master in it, but for the purposes of this rant, I'm talking about the one in the new series (since I was searching for Ten/Master fic). |
